Spiritually Speaking: A Love Affair

“Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ…” 1 Thessalonians 1:3 (KJV)

Your walk with God is like a romantic relationship.

Just when you thought you knew everything about that special someone, you uncover more and inevitably grow deeper in love with him or her.

That’s how it should be with Jesus. We can’t last long with just one touch from Him—just like it isn’t enough to hear “I love you” just once from those we care about.

“And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength…” Matthew 12:30 (KJV)

Many married couples will tell you that after a while, the life of matrimony becomes habit or even duty. They lose the zeal of doing everything with the intention of making the other person happy. Just because the feeling is not always there, does not mean the love is gone.

Sure, the butterflies and giddy excitement of infatuation may rarely reappear—but the comforting, constant, ever-enduring love, like the glowing hot embers of a fire, is what we all really want anyway. That is where true, powerful love is found.

Relationships take work and effort to keep the connection alive. But it is a simple process. It requires staying in touch, going out of your way to be affectionate and always looking for ways to give back to that person in both physical and emotional ways.

If we give God our time and our heart in obedience, He promises to return the love in a variety of ways:

“He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.” John 14:21 (KJV)

We know that God’s love never fades for us, and as humans, we will never be able to love to the extent He does. Even though we cannot always deliver on our end, He always holds up His.

“Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:39 (KJV)

He has more love to bestow upon us than we could imagine. So let us not become weary, but keep that vision of closeness and intimacy locked on target.

Keep the fire lit every day, and that empty spot within you that nothing in this world can satisfy will be filled with His unending love.

Don’t lose your first love fervor for Jesus.
