Spiritually Speaking: Under Construction

We often come upon construction zones while driving; everyone is forced to slow down, lanes are closed off, the road is full of bumps, potholes and even detours.

Some of us have to face this same route every day to and from work or wherever else we need to be.

We try to make the best of it while singing obnoxiously or playing word games with the license plate in front of us, but for the most part we dread it.

A lot of times too, we might notice a new building structure in the works along our drive.

We usually notice when the big tasks are completed and we say “wow, they’re really coming along fast!”

And then it seems like the workers stall for a while.
We can see the outside frame and most of the hard labor is accomplished, so what’s taking them so long?
I feel the same way sometimes about my own spiritual growth.
I understand we are not all at the same level in our walk with Christ.

Maybe some of us are still in the beginning phases and we’re seeing gigantic changes to our foundations and infrastructures–and no doubt, it is a super exciting time.

However, don’t be surprised if it doesn’t stay that way. In fact, it won’t.
Like a new home made by a careful craftsman who takes pride in His work and wants to make every nail count, God is constantly at work in our lives.
“But now, O LORD, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand.” (Isaiah 64:8, ESV)
Whether it seems He is demolishing our entire framework, fine-tuning the delicate wiring that makes us spark, or just doing a little maintenance and cleanup–tightening here, dusting there–God has the caution tape up around our hearts, round the clock.
That’s why we still make mistakes and do silly things even though we know better; He’s still working on us.
Sometimes we need an update–given some revitalizing revelation–and so God puts us through a time of remodeling. This process can get pretty cluttered and chaotic, causing some inconveniences and making us say things like “everything was going fine until…”
Other times we hardly notice any change happening and we get bored and discouraged by the same routine and scenery around us; we forget our Lord is detail-oriented and intricate (Psalm 139:13-16).
But when His projects are completed, we’re grateful; we look back, glad we don’t look like we used to.
So when your life starts to seem like such a big mess, just remember, you’re a work in progress.
